The Kamloops RCMP Detachment responded to approximately 272 calls for service from Friday Jan. 3, 2025, to 9 a.m. on Monday Jan. 6. Below are some highlights from those reports.

Bear-spray assault

An altercation between teenagers escalated into an assault with a weapon investigation on Royal Avenue this weekend.

On Jan. 4, 2025, around 4:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers responded to Royal Avenue, where a consent fight had allegedly turned into a bear spray deployment, impacting at least two people who were involved.

Police dog helps locate assault suspect

A man was taken into custody thanks to the tracking skills of police dog Neeka.

On Sunday Jan. 5, 2025, at approximately 3:10 a.m., Kamloops RCMP frontline officers received a report involving a taxi driver who had allegedly been assaulted. The suspect was last seen fleeing on foot down the alley between Tamarack and Fort avenues. The Police Dog Service (PDS) attended and led officers to a residence.

A suspect exited and was arrested without incident. He was released once sober, with a court date and conditions. Charge recommendations are anticipated as part of the assessment and approval process.

Weapons report at the mall

Multiple police officers responded to the Aberdeen Mall Friday afternoon, where a youth was allegedly in possession of a possible handgun.

On Friday Jan. 3, 2025, at approximately 4:40 p.m., Kamloops RCMP Detachment frontline officers attended the location on the 1300-block of the Trans Canada Highway West, and quickly located and arrested two youth suspects. A bb-gun and knife were located as part of the investigation.

Both youths were provided with warnings and transported to their homes, where police also conversed with their guardians.

Stolen vehicle suspects arrested

A woman is facing charges following an arrest made with the assistance of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment’s Police Dog Service (PDS).

On Jan. 3, 2025, around 7:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP Detachment frontline officers were called to the North Hills Mall on Tranquille Road where a vehicle that was reported as stolen had been observed.

With assistance from the Crime Reduction Unit, the vehicle was located and a spike belt was successfully deployed. Attempts to drive the vehicle continued onto Carson Crescent, where its two occupants departed on foot. A male suspect surrendered, while a woman tried to hide, but was unsuccessful thanks in part to police dog Neeka. The woman was also wanted on warrants.

The male suspect was released without process, while the female was held for a bail hearing on charges related to possession of stolen property over $5,000, obstruction, and flight from police. She was remanded in custody with a next appearance scheduled for Jan. 10, 2025.
