Police officer injured during downtown altercation

A Kamloops RCMP frontline officer was taken to hospital following a report of a shoplifter downtown.

Around 2:17 p.m., February 11, Kamloops RCMP responded to a report of a theft in progress at a retail location on 4th Avenue and Lansdowne Street. A man dressed in camo, jogging pants, and a black jacket with grey hoodie, allegedly stole merchandise from the store and was actively being followed by the person who reported the theft.

Police responded and shortly after, a frontline officer called for backup and reported he was injured following an altercation with the suspect. No weapon was involved in the incident.

A 19-year-old man from Kamloops was arrested for offences, which included allegedly assaulting a police officer. He was apprehended with the assistance of a Police Service Dog and has been taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries as a result.

An officer was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
