Suspect arrested in relation to the fire at Thompson Hotel

Kamloops RCMP File 2020-39979

December 4th, 2020

One suspect is in custody after the fire at the Thompson Hotel early Thursday morning.

On the 3rd of December at approximately 01:03 AM, the Kamloops RCMP attended to the Thompson Hotel at 650 Victoria Street to assist Kamloops Fire Rescue with a suspicious fire. Our front line officers conducted an investigation and were able to obtain video surveillance which showed that a suspect had intentionally started the fire before fleeing the area. A description was provided to all front line officers and at 03:20 AM, a suspect matching the description was located possessing evidence that he was responsible for starting it. The suspect was arrested and returned to the Kamloops Detachment for further investigation. As a result,  a 39 year old male Kamloops resident was provided documentation for an upcoming court appearance to face charges for this incident. When completed, all findings from our investigation will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for review and consideration of charge approval.

“It is very disheartening that someone would intentionally start a fire like this in our community putting others at risk for no apparent reason” said Sgt Darren Michels, “We are certainly very happy that this fire was observed early and didn’t have time to spread”.

Anyone with any further information regarding this fire areĀ asked to call the Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
